Anthropic revenue soars to nearly $17 billion ahead of mega IPO
Anthropic reported third-quarter revenue of nearly $17 billion, marking an extraordinary jump from $1.4 billion in the year-ago period. The latest figures, disclosed in an amended IPO filing, offer investors a closer look at the AI company's financial performance as it prepares for a potential blockbuster stock market debut. Revenue jumps more than 1,100% year-on-year
Anthropic generated $16.96 billion in revenue in the third quarter ended September 30, compared with $1.4 billion in the corresponding period last year. Revenue also increased from $11.56 billion in the second quarter, highlighting the rapid expansion of demand for its AI products and services.
Growth rate slows despite massive revenue expansion
Despite the impressive numbers, Anthropic's growth momentum showed signs of cooling. Revenue increased approximately 47% quarter-on-quarter in the September quarter, compared with 144% growth in the preceding three months. The slowdown highlights the challenges of sustaining extraordinary expansion as competition intensifies in the AI industry.
Anthropic reports $23.3 billion net loss
Anthropic reported a net loss of approximately $23.29 billion for the third quarter, narrowing from $66.3 billion in the previous quarter. However, the company swung back to an operating loss of $567 million after recording operating income of $974 million in the second quarter. Much of the reported net loss was linked to non-cash accounting adjustments involving convertible notes and derivative liabilities.
Computing expenses surge, operating margins shrink
Rising computing costs have emerged as a major challenge for Anthropic. Operating expenses increased to $17.5 billion in the third quarter from $10.6 billion in the previous quarter. The company attributed much of the pressure to expensive short-term computing capacity, which it had to secure to meet rising demand. Its adjusted operating margin also declined to 15% from 19% in the second quarter.
Nearly $895 billion in AI infrastructure commitments
Anthropic's amended IPO filing disclosed approximately $895.4 billion in purchase and lease commitments, with substantially all of the spending linked to computing and infrastructure. Nearly half of these obligations are expected to be incurred by the end of 2030, while around $69.8 billion is due within the 12 months following September 30, 2026. The scale of these commitments underscores the enormous investment required to support its AI ambitions.
Enterprise demand provides a major growth engine
Anthropic's customer base has expanded rapidly alongside its revenue. The company reported more than 11,900 customers generating at least $100,000 in revenue over a trailing 12-month period as of September 30. This was up from more than 1,500 customers at the end of 2025, highlighting the growing adoption of its AI offerings among businesses.
